Our Little Secret is an original song first featured in The Dramaturg, the third episode of the second season of Smash. Being an original song, it was written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. The version released as a single features Julian Ovenden (Simon) and Katharine McPhee (Karen Cartwright) on lead vocals, although McPhee's lines are not featured in the episode.
In Bombshell, the song sees Marilyn meet JFK at a fundraiser. Sparks fly, and they begin to sneak off together whenever he can manage to get away. But it is a degrading and doomed relationship.
Episode Version[]
Opens on Bing Crosby’s house in Palm Springs. Kennedy and Marilyn have arranged to meet for the first time. The space is transformed, we hear music, the sound of a party. Kennedy sees Marilyn enter and their eyes lock across the room.
Marilyn:
(spoken) Mr. President...
John F. Kennedy:
(spoken) Call me Jack. I’m a huge fan of your pictures.
Marilyn:
(spoken) Ha, I’m a fan of yours as well.
John F. Kennedy:
He starts to take Marilyn’s jacket off.
(spoken) Glad to finally meet you in the, ah, flesh.
Marilyn:
(spoken) Disappointed?
John F. Kennedy:
(spoken) Shall we go somewhere to talk? Get to know each other better. Somewhere where there’s -
No FBI getting nervous
No CIA peeking through
I've got my own Secret Service to take care of you
Marilyn:
(spoken) We can get to know each other right here, can’t we?
John F. Kennedy:
(spoken) Why don’t we go where -
No one from Time or from Newsweek,
Can document our rendezvous
It’s our little secret
Just us two
Marilyn:
(spoken) Everyone’s watching. Is your wife?
John F. Kennedy:
(spoken) Jackie doesn't approve of my parties or my friends.
Marilyn:
(spoken) I hear you have a lot of "friends". Maybe that’s why?
John F. Kennedy:
(spoken) Our host wants to see you.
Marilyn:
(spoken) Bing? Now? Where is he?
She notices a large bed.
John F. Kennedy:
(spoken) I had to get you alone.
Marilyn:
(spoken) Do you always get what you want?
John F. Kennedy:
(spoken) I haven’t told you what I wanted yet. How 'bout I never do? And you have to guess..
He pins Marilyn up against the wall and starts to seduce her more.
Outside of this room there's a cold war,
But you'd never know it in here
There’s just no defense, the heat’s too intense
And oh, how it rises whenever you’re near
Marilyn:
(spoken) You want the same thing everyone else wants. I thought you’d be different.
She smiles and turns her back to the President, and he begins to undress her.
John F. Kennedy:
So let’s do it now for our country,
And raise the old red, white, and blue
It’s our little secret, just us two
Just us two
Just us two
The two go on to the bed and start to kiss.
Album Version[]
John F. Kennedy:
Nobody asking me questions
Nobody planning a coup
Nobody with their suggestions of what not to do
Nobody taking our picture
Nobody turning the screw
It's our little secret, just us two
Outside of this room, there's a cold war
But you'd never know it in here
There's just no defense, the heat's too intense
And oh, how it rises whenever you're near
Yes, every president has one
A pleasure that's strictly taboo
It's our little secret, just us two
Marilyn:
Come here, baby
John F. Kennedy:
No FBI getting nervous (Marilyn: Mmmmm...)
No CIA peeking through (Marilyn: Peeking through)
I have my own Secret Service to take care of you (Marilyn: To take care of me, yeah, me...)
No one from Time or from Newsweek
Both:
To document our rendezvous
It's our little secret, just us two
John F. Kennedy:
In politics, you must be careful
Both:
Your bedfellow may be a shark
John F. Kennedy:
From the left, from the right
Baby, turn off the light
Both:
It's easy to do what you must in the dark
John F. Kennedy:
So let's do it now for our country (Marilyn: Oh, for our country)
And raise the old red, white and...
Both:
...blue
It's our little secret, just us two
Just us two
Just us two
John F. Kennedy:
Shhhh!
